Finalist - 2009 Coaches of the Year powered by Critical Reload
Dave Rice joined the BYU coaching staff as an assistant in May 2005 and was promoted to Associate Head Coach in April 2008. Rice has 17 years of coaching experience, including 15 seasons at the Division I level at BYU, UNLV and Utah State. As a player, Rice was a member of UNLV’s 1989-90 National Championship and 1990-91 Final Four teams that won a school-record 45 consecutive games.
An excellent recruiter and on-the-floor coach, Rice coordinates the team’s offense and recruiting efforts. In his three seasons coordinating the Cougar offense, BYU has generated the Mountain West Conference’s top attack two years and ranked second once.
Rice has helped BYU earn three straight 20 wins seasons and a 72-26 overall record while recording back-to-back outright Mountain West Conference Championships–the program’s first back-to-back outright titles since 1979 and 1980. The Cougars have also appeared in the national top-25 polls in each of the last two seasons while making consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The last time BYU was ranked in back-to-back season was in 1981 and 1982 and the previous BYU team to be ranked was in 1993.
